Cork & Canvas is a paint-and-sip studio that is just as whimsical and innovative as the name suggests, having just landed in Darlinghurst, Sydney following growing success in Melbourne. It’s an invitation for Sydney-siders to enjoy a creative night, painting and socialising with friends while sipping on a glass or two of bubbly; stepping away from fine art and into fun art.
Melinda Janiszewski, who founded Cork & Canvas over five years ago, noticed a gap in the market for a “fun and creative way to socialise away from the mundane day to day life.” It’s true that we lack diverse ways to escape from the fast-paced, demanding work culture in Australia, and this art experience simply fills the space with creativity.
The premise is this: guests bring their own bottle of wine and nibbles, and then enjoy a relaxing night painting in a welcoming environment alongside new friends. It’s a mesh of wholesome attitudes and artistic freedom, where painting experience isn’t required but good vibes are a must. The atmosphere is so inclusive and positive, and it’s evident that Melinda’s passion for making sure everybody has fun is a key factor in Cork & Canvas’ success.
“Since we launched in Melbourne, we’ve had really great responses from customers,” Melinda says. “Opening our second studio in Sydney, we plan to grow the business and share this unique experience with more Australians.”
Instead of heading to the local pub or bar, this gives people something different to do. It’s a great way to catch up with friends and unwind.
To add a personal touch to the creativity, Cork & Canvas are celebrating Pet Appreciation Week (June 4-10) by offering patrons a chance to paint their own pets on June 10. Locals can submit a photo of their pet for an in-house artist to pre-sketch onto the canvas, and let their creativity run wild under the gentle guidance of a talented residential artist. Their 5 August session is still available but filling up quickly.
With a range of group painting sessions on offer, Cork & Canvas is nothing short of the perfect space for beginners to ignite their creative journey in a relaxed environment. “We work closely with customers to create a unique and memorable experience for all our guests and can create bespoke paintings for clients,” Melinda says.
